The biblical text says that Tamar married Er, one of Judah's sons. But Er was a wicked man, and God punished him. This caused Tamar to become a widow and childless. According to the custom of levirate marriage, Tamar had to marry Onan, the brother of her first husband. The problem was that Onan also did evil in the eyes of the Lord. The Bible says that he did not want to leave descendants for his brother, and therefore ended up being completely disrespectful to Tamar, using her only to satisfy his desires. Just as happened with Er, Onan was also punished by the Lord. Thus, once again Tamar was widowed and childless. Judah had another younger son, but he refused to marry him to Tamar. Superstitiously, Judah believed that Tamar was the reason for the punishments that befell his sons. Tamar and Judah: Realizing that Judah would leave her completely destitute, Tamar covered herself with a veil and had relations with Judah as if she were a prostitute. As collateral for their relationship, Tamar asked Judah to give her the ring, the cord, and the staff he carried. These items were crucial for identifying a person at that time. Later, when Judah learned that Tamar was pregnant, he demanded that she be burned for adultery. But Judah didn't know that he himself had impregnated Tamar. Upon discovering this information, Judah admitted his wrongdoing and that Tamar was a righteous woman. The Bible says that Tamar gave birth to two sons: Perez and Zerah. It was through Perez's lineage that Judah and Tamar became ancestors of King David and the Lord Jesus Christ.
