OMA COURAGE? Wieso die FDP zu doof für Brecht ist – Literatur #41
The FDP (Free Democratic Party) has come up with something particularly remarkable for its European election campaign: A poster shows lead candidate Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann and bears the headline "Grandma Courage." This allusion to Bertolt Brecht's episodic drama "Mother Courage and Her Children" is likely to backfire, as the play portrays its protagonist as a war profiteer who loses her three children during the Thirty Years' War and continually makes a business out of suffering and misery. Brecht wrote the play in 1938/39, and it premiered in Zurich in 1941. While it is only peripherally a commentary on the Second World War, it primarily articulates a pointed critique of the state and capitalism. Today, as we move towards a post-Westphalian order, the drama speaks to us more powerfully than ever. In the new episode of "Prosperity for All" Literature, Ole Nymoen and Wolfgang M. Schmitt analyze the economic and political connections. You can listen to our additional content on Steady and Patreon. Thank you!
