Bret Easton Ellis was the enfant terrible of the American literary world in the 1980s – and his works still provoke. They provoke not only rejection, but also radical thinking. With "Below Zero," Ellis achieved a highly acclaimed debut; his 1991 novel "American Psycho" became a major scandal even before its publication, as Ellis's publisher refused to publish the book despite having already paid a large advance. Newspapers like "The New York Times" warned against the Wall Street thriller, and it was banned in Germany for years. "American Psycho" is about the young stock speculator Patrick Bateman, who makes a fortune on Wall Street, although we never learn exactly what his work entails. Instead, Ellis describes his encounters with colleagues and the heinous acts of violence Bateman commits in his free time. Bateman's identity is mask-like; his personality has no inner core, but is composed of the brands of luxury products he consumes.
