PODCAST TITLE: “Şevên Govendê – The Heart of Kurdish Weddings and Rituals” Introduction (00:00 - 01:00) Roja we baş, hevalno! In today's podcast, we will discuss weddings (dawet), one of the most colorful and joyful traditions of Kurdish society, and the ancient rituals (ritûelên kevn) that are kept alive at these weddings. Kurdish weddings are not just celebrations of marriage; they are also occasions where togetherness, solidarity, culture, and history are enacted. 1. What is a Wedding and Ritual? (01:00 - 03:00) A wedding (dûkan) is the social and communal celebration of the union of two people. A ritual (ritûel) is the series of repetitive, symbolic actions that make this celebration meaningful. A Kurdish wedding takes place with the participation of not only the bride and groom, but also a village, a neighborhood, and sometimes even a tribe. Therefore, Kurdish weddings are not individual ceremonies but communal ceremonies (seremonîya civakî). 2. Sharia (Shari): The Pre-Wedding Contract (3:00 - 5:00) One of the most important traditions held before a wedding is the Sharia. The Sharia is the gathering of families to decide on matters such as the betrothal (peyman danîn), the bride price (sermêz), and the wedding date. While this gathering is sometimes simple, accompanied by tea, in some regions it turns into a small celebration with music and food. During the Sharia, women generally stay in a separate room, while men in a separate room. This demonstrates the highly organized family structures among Kurds. 3. Henna Night (Şeva Hênê) – An Ancient Women's Ritual (05:00 - 08:00) The henna night (şeva hênê), held the day before the wedding, holds a special place in Kurdish culture. The bride, along with her friends and close female relatives, attends this night. Henna (henna) is applied to the bride's hands, while laments are sung. One of the most well-known laments is: “Ez vê jine digerim, Teva zarokiya xwe.” (“I am sending this bride away, her entire childhood has remained here.”) This ceremony carries the meaning of both a farewell and a blessing accompanied by tears. 4. Govend (Halay) – Steps Taken Together (08:00 - 11:00) An essential part of Kurdish weddings: the govend (halay). A govend is no ordinary dance. Every step, every turn, bears the marks of unity, solidarity, and collective spirit. The person in the lead is known as the serê govendê (head of the halay). This person is generally the most dominant figure in the dance. Music is accompanied by the def (erbane), zurna, saz, or, today, digital music. In some regions, each tribe develops its own style of govend: Botan, Hakkari, Amed, Erzurum, Soran, Behdînan… 5. Xûltik û Têrîn – Tip Tradition and Traditional Songs (11:00 - 13:00) During the wedding, xûltik (tip throwing) scenes take place. Money, gold, or a handkerchief is thrown over the bride or groom's head. This gesture signifies both a celebration and a wish for luck and abundance. At the same time, klam (folk song), stran (song), and especially lawik (amorous folk tunes) are sung. 6. Colorful Attire – Zêwacê Kurdî (1:00 PM - 3:00 PM) For women, the wedding is a time to don their finest Kurdish attire (cil û berg). Bright colors, gold belts (zêrrîşk), embroidered dresses… Each symbolizes an ethnic identity. Men sometimes wear a şal û şepik (traditional men's attire) and sometimes opt for a modern suit. But both styles reflect tradition and modernity. 7. After the Wedding – Serhildana Dîtinê (3:00 PM - 5:00 PM) In some regions, after the wedding, the bride meets the elder of the house for the first time. This encounter is called çavbûn (meeting). This scene is very emotional. The bride bows her head, and the elder extends his hand and prays: “Bi xêr hatî, jinê xweşik.” (“Welcome, beautiful bride.”) Closing (5:00 PM - 6:00 PM) Kurdish weddings are not just a marriage; they are a collection of rituals where history and the future come together. Govend, şerî, henna, klam… These are not just entertainment; they are the memory of a people. Let us not forget: The best way to keep a culture alive is to preserve its rituals.
