The heatwave was supposed to wait until July. It did not. We rolled into Arles from Avignon expecting a gentle few days of Roman ruins and Van Gogh — and got 40°C, two-hour sightseeing stints, and a water bottle that decided to empty itself down my trousers in front of a cemetery. Mandy got her Van Gogh fix, I got obsessed with a bird app, and we both learned that the Provençal sun does not care about your itinerary.
