MUSIC TEACHER RESOURCES - Paw Paw Patch
MUSIC TEACHING TIPS: Students make two lines, girls on one side and boys on the other. During the first verse ("Where oh where is pretty little Susie?), the girls are led around the boys' line and back to their places by the first girl. During the second verse ("Come on, boys, let's go find her), the boys are led around the girls' line and back to their places by the first boy. In the third verse ("Pickin' up paw paws, put 'em in your pocket/basket), the leaders of the two lines "peel the banana" while pretending to pick up paw paws, and make a bridge at the bottom of the two lines. Then everyone except the two people making the bridge go under the bridge and back to the top of the line, creating a new head couple (or first boy and first girl). The third verse may need to repeated several times until they finish the movements. If you have a large class, you may choose to make two sets (or two pairs of lines) as we did so that it goes faster and more people get to be the leaders. Each verse ends with the words "Way down yonder in the paw paw patch." Paw paws are a type of fruit. This song can be used to teach sixteenth notes ("pretty little"). This is great for kindergarten and first grade (elementary school).
