Australia Housing Crisis: New ABS Data Shows Housing Starts Fell 11.2%
Australia’s housing supply crisis has taken another concerning turn. New Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows that total dwelling commencements fell 11.2 per cent in the March quarter of 2026, dropping to 48,012 homes. Private detached-house commencements declined, while apartment, unit and townhouse starts recorded an even sharper fall. But the headline does not tell the entire story. The ABS trend measure still showed modest improvement, and more than 243,000 dwellings remained under construction. The real question is whether Australia can convert its housing pipeline into enough completed homes to meet the National Housing Accord target of 1.2 million homes by June 2029. In this video, we examine: • Why Australian housing starts fell • The difference between housing approvals, commencements and completions • Why apartment construction is so important • Whether Australia can meet its 1.2 million-home target • How slower housing supply could affect renters and first-home buyers • What homeowners, mortgage holders and property investors should monitor next Australia does not simply need more housing approvals on paper. Projects must secure finance, workers, materials and infrastructure before they can become completed homes. For renters, first-home buyers and mortgage holders, the pace of construction could directly affect future rents, property prices and housing affordability.
