May 2026 NGN Webinar - Dave Kotz (Dartmouth) - SPLICE: Privacy in Smart Homes

**Title**: SPLICE: Privacy in Smart Homes *Abstract:* Our homes are increasingly embedded with ‘smart’ devices, networked with each other and the Internet, forming ‘Smart Homes.’ The prevalence of these devices, which can sense our environments, share personal data, and actuate physical infrastructure, raises significant privacy and security risks. After discussing some key research challenges in this space, we present results from our collaborative research project, SPLICE: Security and Privacy in the Lifecycle of IoT in Consumer Environments.  *Bio:* David Kotz is the Pat and John Rosenwald Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Dartmouth College and, for academic year 2025-26, a Royal Society Wolfson Visiting Fellow at Imperial College London and a Visiting Professor at University College London. As a tenured member of the Dartmouth faculty, he served 15 years in administrative roles as Provost, Associate Dean, and center director. His current research involves security and privacy in smart homes and wireless networks. He has published over 280 refereed papers, received 12 patents, obtained $89m in grant funding, given over 200 invited lectures, and mentored over 100 research students and postdocs. He is a AAAS Fellow, an ACM Fellow, an IEEE Fellow, and an elected member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was a Visiting Professor at ETH Zürich (2019-20) and a Fulbright Fellow to India (2008-09). He received his AB in Computer Science and Physics from Dartmouth in 1986, and his PhD in Computer Science from Duke University in 1991
