Fidelio to go (Sonnleithner, Breuning, Treitschke und Beethoven in 9,5 Minuten)
“Come, hope, let not the last star of the weary grow pale!” – Fear not, hope does not die in this opera, no one dies; on the contrary, liberation is achieved. And, completely devoid of music, SOMMERS WELTLITERATUR now summarizes this only musical theater work by the great Ludwig van Beethoven in just 9.5 minutes. The court theater librettist Joseph Sonnleithner initially adapted a French opera; his first libretto version was subsequently revised by Stephan von Breuning and Georg Friedrich Treitschke. The story goes like this: The courageous Leonore has disguised herself as a man and has been working for some time under the alias Fidelio as an assistant to the jailer Rocco, because she suspects that her husband Florestan is being held as a secret prisoner in the state prison overseen by Rocco, and in the very lowest cell. Naturally, the jailer's daughter falls in love with the supposed Fidelio and gives her former suitor Jaquino the cold shoulder. While daughter and father are busy planning a wedding with the promising young man, Leonore wants only one thing: to be with her husband. The opportunity arises when Don Pizarro, the governor in charge of the prison, intends to kill Florestan to prevent his illegal imprisonment from being exposed by a minister. Leonore saves her husband, the minister (a friend of Florestan's) restores justice, and all is well. "I dared to speak the truth boldly, / And the chains are my reward." (Florestan in FIDELIO II, 1.) Warning: THIS TO-GO VERSION DOES NOT REPLACE READING THE ORIGINAL. Reading it yourself is enjoyable! Or, of course, seeing the opera!
