Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This colorful temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur. There is an amazingly beautiful ornate entrance way and many intricate carvings and statues inside the temple, including an impressive mural wall. This is a very peaceful temple in the middle of a very busy district of Kuala Lumpur - 4 minutes walk from the Petaling Street Market. The oldest, largest and the richest Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur, Sri Maha Mariamman. K. Thamboosamy Pillai founded the original temple in 1873 as a private family shrine, moving it to the current site in 1885. Later, after his death in Singapore in 1902, the temple was opened to the general public in the 1920s. Devi Sri Mariamman was associated with Hindu goddesses like Devi Parvati, Devi Kali and May Durga as well as with her North Indian counterpart Shitala Devi and Eastern Indian counterpart Manasa Devi. The word Mari meaning "Rain" and the Amman means "Mother” in Tamil. She was worshipped by the ancient Tamils as the bringer of rain and thus also the bringer of prosperity, since the abundance of their crops was dependent largely upon adequate rainfall. It's a must visit place. Shoulders and knees must be covered by women to enter. You need to check your shoes into the ‘cloak’ room (30 cents/pair). For that women are also given a sarong & something to cover their shoulders (if they are bare). Hinduism or Non-Hinduism are welcome to visit this temple.
