Germany: Then & Now - The Immaculate Architecture of Cologne (Pre-1915 Photos) Free Imperial Cities

Today we will take a stroll through one of Germany’s most important, historic and beautiful cities - Cologne. To accompany our research, we will look at Old World Photographs of Cologne taken before 1915, and we will compare those with images taken after 1945. Cologne was one of the most heavily damaged cities in all of Germany during World War II, being reduced from over 750,000 residents to less than 25,000 directly after the war. Over 90% of the original architecture and infrastructure of Cologne was said to have been lost. Today we will try to examine the immaculate architecture which once existed in this trade hub of Germany, and we will also address the historical narrative regarding Free and Imperial Cities of the Holy Roman Empire, and the role they played influencing world politics.
