La envidia: el veneno que bebes esperando que muera el otro

There's a poison almost all of us have drunk, yet no one admits to having tasted it. It's served in silence, when news arrives of a friend's promotion, a neighbor's new house, someone's perfect trip on a screen. Outwardly, you smile and congratulate; inwardly, something tightens. That tightening has a name: envy, the fourth of the seven enemies that live within your mind. And it has a terrible characteristic that distinguishes it from all the others: it's the only one that offers absolutely nothing in return. Anger unleashes, fear protects, greed promises. Envy only poisons—and you're the one who drinks the poison, while you wait for the other person to suffer the damage. This is the fourth episode of the series "The 7 Enemies of Your Mind." In it, we discover what neuroscience found when examining envy in a brain scanner: that it activates the same brain regions as physical pain—envy literally hurts—and that the downfall of the envied person activates the reward circuit. We understand why social media has become the most efficient envy factory in history, and why the problem isn't what you have, but who you compare yourself to. Then we explore how five great traditions defused this poison: Judaism, where the first death in the Bible stems from envy (Cain and Abel) and where it is warned that "envy rots the bones"; Christianity, which counted it among the deadly sins and taught that love does not envy; Islam, which warns that envy devours good deeds like fire devours wood; Hinduism, which included it millennia ago on its own list of internal enemies and taught that your own imperfect path is better than someone else's perfect path; and Buddhism, which holds the most beautiful antidote: mudita, the art of rejoicing in the good fortune of others. You don't need to believe in any religion. Just take the key to transform the poison into a compass and finally run your own race again. 🔔 Subscribe: This is episode 4 of 7 in "The 7 Enemies of Your Mind."
