La colonización protohistórica del archipiélago canario: investigación arqueológica en Lanzarote

Eiroa Rodríguez, José Ángel González Ballesteros, and Alicia Hernández Robles (University of Murcia) The project entitled “Phase 0” of archaeological study at the medieval archaeological site of San Esteban (Murcia) (http://sanesteban.um.es/) has been underway since 2018 thanks to a collaboration agreement between the University of Murcia and the City Council of Murcia. Its main objective is to investigate the archaeological remains of the Arrixaca suburb, the main extramural neighborhood of the Andalusian city, from an interdisciplinary perspective, with special attention to bioarchaeological analysis. The initial interventions of the project have focused on the building known as the “oratory,” the maqbara, and the two main buildings of the site (Enclosures I and II), one of which functioned as a funduq in its final phase of occupation. Based on this data, working hypotheses can be formulated regarding the evolution of commercial areas, the centrality of suburbs, or urban growth, which allow for a rethinking of some classic ideas about Andalusian cities.
