Are We Asking the Right Question? | Field Notes Live

This week in Field Notes Live, I wanted to explore one idea from this week's Field Notes a little more deeply. We often ask whether a horse's response is pain or behaviour. But I've been wondering if we're sometimes asking the wrong question altogether. What if, instead of asking "What is the horse doing?", we asked... "What is the horse expecting to happen next?" Through the story of a bay mare whose painful early saddling experiences shaped her expectations long after the pain had gone, we explore how memory, trust and previous experience influence behaviour. Perhaps behaviour is not simply something to change. Perhaps it is information inviting us to become more curious. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
