Haririha Mugdha, also known as Chandana Charchita, is a beloved Ashtapadi from the timeless Gita Govinda of poet Jayadeva. Every night at the sacred Jagannath Temple in Puri, the Gita Govinda is sung—a tradition that has continued unbroken since Jayadeva's own time. This particular verse paints an intoxicating picture of Lord Krishna: his blue body painted with sandalwood paste, adorned in yellow silk and a tulsi garland, his gem-studded earrings swaying as he revels in the joyful company of the gopis in Vrindavan. Radha's dear friend narrates this scene to her, describing, one by one, the romantic antics of each gopi with Krishna—a bittersweet account that stirs longing and wonder in equal measure in Radha's heart.
