Upon settling on the islet, the Mexica used earthen baskets called chinampas, made from layers of mud and branches, to create firm ground. Seedbeds were their primary form of cultivation. The city's first name was Cuamixtitlán, "Place of the Eagle among the Clouds." Tenoch, "Stone Tuna," was the true builder of the Mexica state. He is considered the last Cuauhtlahtoani, leader of the Mexica pilgrimage until their establishment on Lake Texcoco. He is the Tlatoani who provided political and territorial stability. In 1363, Acamanpitchtli, "holding fist, firm fist," was the second Tlatoani, and in honor of Tenoch, he changed the name of the city and called it "Tenochtitlán, Place of the Stone Tuna." After several conflicts over domination of the basin, the Triple Alliance emerged: Tacuba, Tenochtitlán, and Texcoco. They united and began to control everything, opening trade and tributary routes. Over the years, they resolve their land and water issues. After the death of Ahuizotl, Moctezuma Xocoyotzin is crowned the new Tlatoani.
