In this new season of Third Man Factor, we plunge back into untouched wilderness where tracks vanish, daylight is swallowed by thick canopy, and every metre forward through dense bush is hard earned. Armed with GPS, compass, and custom 3D camera rigs, we navigate a landscape that resists passage in pursuit of an unnamed alpine lake, a place we simply call Mystery Lake. This is exploration in its rawest form, uncertain, unforgiving, and relentlessly real, experienced in immersive 3D from the front line of the adventure. The Mystery Lake expedition begins. Leaving a secluded trailhead behind, we plunge straight into dense New Zealand beech forest, navigating swampy ground and searching for a barely visible spur that will lead us deeper into one of the most remote and trackless corners of the South Island. With favourable weather above and an unnamed alpine lake hidden somewhere ahead, the excitement is high as we commit ourselves to another journey into the unknown. After climbing high above the valley floor, we emerge onto a hidden forest plateau we name Mistletoe Plateau, after discovering vivid scarlet mistletoe flowers scattered across the forest floor beneath a towering beech tree. It marks the completion of the first league of the mission and the moment we leave the familiar behind. Ahead lies untouched wilderness, untracked bush, and a destination few people will ever see.
