Kanaka Krishna Prashanth is the daughter of Dr.R.Subramaniam and Dr.Uma Subramaniam. She started to learn Bharathanatyam from her mother Dr.Uma Subramaniam at the tender age of 6 and started giving stage performances at the age of eight. Kanaka started to learn Carnatic music at the very age of 6 from Thiruveezhimizhalai Padmashri. Dakshinamurthy Pillai and continued her tutelage from Shri.Ramesh Kumar of Thiruveezhimizhalai. Presently she is the student of Smt.Bhushany Kalyanaraman. She also learnt Thevaram from his father Dr.R.Subramaniam who is the direct disciple of Kanchi Mahaperiava and has been entitled ‘Thevara Doctor’ by His Holiness. Kanaka is a bharathanatyam dancer, musician, teacher, choreographer and a composer. She has been chosen as a B GRADE artiste by Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai. She holds a post-graduation in Bharathanatyam and Carnatic Music. She is currently doing PhD in Bharathanatyam. She is working as an assistant professor in the department of Natya, MGR Janaki college of Arts and science. Kanaka is one among the very few artists who can sing and do nattuvangam for a dance recital. Kanaka is known for her performances in ‘Thirumurai’- the tamil hymns in praise of Lord Shiva composed by various Nayanmars in a margam format. She has choreographed as well as performed in more than 500 stages exhibiting professional talent in Bharatanatyam dance and Classical Music. She has performed in almost all reputed Sabhas namely Krishna Gana Sabha, Brahma Gana Sabha, Karthik Fine Arts, etc. In order to enhance her skills in Bharatanatyam further, she is now currently learning certain nuances from Smt .Nandini Ramani, under her tutelage. She is the proud organizer of ‘Veezhimizhalai Natyanjali Festival’ and has been organizing Natyanjali for the past six years at Thiruveezhimizhalai, Thiruvar District on the auspicious day of ‘Siva Ratri’. She has performed several shows on AIR and several shows in television channels like Sun TV, Raj TV, Kalaignar TV, Makkal TV, Jaya TV, Podhigai TV etc. She has been interviewed by many Newspapers, Magazines and Television Channels.
