Being and Logos - Introduction to Middle-Platonism - 2 of X - The Old Academy, pt 1

Welcome to Being & Logos - An Introduction to Middle-Platonism While Plotinus and his inheritors are often associated with western mysticism and the occult philosophy, the philosophical ferment of the centuries following the Old Academy (post 347 bce) most directly influenced Hermeticism, Gnosticism, Hellenistic Magic and Astrology, Alexandrian Judaism and early Christianity. This period of philosophy, denoted as “Middle Platonism,” is thus crucially important for the study of the development Western Esotericism and, surprisingly (or not), this period is woefully unappreciated. This seminar aims to be an introduction to Middle-Platonism (c. 100 bce - c. 200 ce), specifically with an eye toward developments in metaphysics. Along with deepening our appreciation of the development of western philosophy, my hope is that we come to better appreciate the philosophical dimensions of Hermeticism, Gnosticism, Hellenistic Magic and Astrology, Alexandrian Judaism, early Christianity, Neo-Platonism and Western Esotericism more widely.
