Unlike ordinary Japanese storehouses that stand apart from the main house, Masuda’s wealthy merchants built their massive lacquered kura inside their homes, completely hidden from the street. Behind the modest wooden facades along this street, entire two-story vaults of black and white plaster stand sheltered under one great roof — invisible to anyone walking by. The deep snow of Akita’s winters shaped this unique architecture: treasures were kept inside, protected from the weather and away from watchful eyes. In 2013, Masuda’s historic district was designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the Japanese government.
