Lightning Under Camouflage (UK) - S/T (Demo 2022)

Debut demo from another brilliant new entity off of A.S.K.E.'s unhinged and eclectic roster. Definitely with strong similarities with Lightning Undersun, not just in the name, LUC appears to be however more focused in genres lesser exposed by the label, particularly the Neofolk and Ambient elements that were already present in LUS, as well as in Longbow's second demo, but with much more emphasis on experimentation, and also with themes surrounding British mythology, like the legend of King Arthur and the dragons of East Britain rather than Nordic myths. Pretty close to unclassifiable however, this release really is an oddball but a beautiful at it. Mixing the soft, rustic Neofolk chords, with Ambient experiments that create a rather unreal, ethereal atmosphere, that reminisces with the experimental meanderings of early Posh Isolation projects, or other labels like Janushoved or Vienna Press, and elements of Industrial as well as a lot of samples co-related with the themes. In a songwriting manner that is almost close to Scum FC in the way it articulates speech and noise samples into the music in a way to make it even more thematically deep. The production and mixing of the music, very multi-layered and with a lot of looping of sections also somehow reminds of the excellent Cold Gate project, from Russia. Another great and idiosyncratic release from ASKE, very thoughtfully contrasting the rustic, traditional elements and nationalist idealist with an almost futuristic way to dismantle and reform these elements in both music and artwork.
