Detecting and Mapping Unmarked Cemeteries with Archaeological Geophysics

A general summary of the ground-penetrating radar (GPR) method focusing how GPR can be used to map unmarked burials. This talk describes results from three case studies: (1) the pre-Deportation Acadian cemetery at Grand-Pré National Historic Site of Canada associated with the parish church of St-Charles-des-Mines (1687-1755); (2) a mass grave associated with the 1747 Battle of Grand-Pré, Nova Scotia; and (3) a mass grave in Terence Bay, Nova Scotia, associated with the 1873 sinking of the SS Atlantic, in which over 500 people lost their lives. A short Q&A follows. Video length = 1 hour. This presentation was delivered as part of the Genealogical Association of Nova Scotia's virtual conference on 23 April, 2023.
