🏜️ Episode 4 – From Atar to Kiffa: Heading South to Sub-Saharan Africa After the spectacular landscapes of the Adrar region and the vast, mineral expanses of northern Mauritania, we set our course due south towards Kiffa, the gateway to Sub-Saharan Africa. As the kilometers pass, the desert transforms. The tracks alternate between sand, corrugated iron, vast rocky expanses, and the African savanna. Storms in the preceding days have sometimes erased all traces of passage, forcing us to navigate by sight between the dunes. The heat becomes oppressive: over 45°C during the day and humidity below 10%. In these conditions, every drop of water is precious. We also discover the impressive Aouelloul meteorite crater, the remnant of a colossal impact that carved a depression some 100 meters deep in the heart of the desert. Between resupply stops, challenging tracks, and exceptionally beautiful bivouacs, life unfolds at the rhythm of the journey. Each evening, our three Trip and Fish campervans set up camp in breathtaking settings where the silence and immensity of the Sahara offer us timeless moments. As we travel south, the villages become more numerous and the human presence more pronounced. Crossing through Kiffa immerses us in the vibrant energy of an authentic African town, before we continue our journey towards new horizons.
