Nathan und seine Kinder to go (Pressler in 12 Minuten)

"Will you allow me, Sultan, to tell a story?" - Of course, Nathan tells his famous ring parable, and the characters in Mirjam Pressler's NATHAN AND HIS CHILDREN also tell much—much more than we at SOMMER'S WORLD LITERATURE can summarize in twelve minutes, so please use this short video only as a springboard for the story. It's not Nathan and Saladin, but the "minor characters" who piece together the story of Lessing's NATHAN THE WISE from their perspectives. A different person speaks in each chapter. It begins with Geshem, the orphan boy who comes to Nathan's house and to whom Nathan gives a name, for which he is infinitely grateful. Even the Templar Knight, who saved Nathan's daughter Recha from the fire, takes Nathan into his house as a kind of son (against the resistance of the savior knight). Last but not least, Recha also learns over the course of the book that she is not Nathan's biological daughter, but "only" an adopted child. The outward plot is initially the same as in Lessing's: The Sultan needs money and tries to trap Nathan with a trick question. Nathan counters with the ring parable and thus wins a friend in Saladin. What's different: The fairy tale of Recha and the knight as siblings doesn't appear – and Nathan is murdered in the end, possibly at the instigation of Saladin's captain, Abu Hassan. But his stories and his love for humanity remain. "God is far away, but humanity is close. Believe me, Elijah, the highest goal of humanity must be reason. Reason and love for other humanity."
