Attention: Nicer new version :-) ### "It's not just children who are fed fairy tales," says Nathan, and he's so right! SUMMER'S WORLD LITERATURE summarizes NATHAN THE WISE by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing in ten minutes, followed by commentary and classification in the #MySenf format. The Jewish merchant Nathan returns from a business trip to find his house burned down. This isn't surprising, given that a religious war is currently raging in the Middle East, but fortunately, his foster daughter Recha has survived. Only his savior is stubborn because he belongs to the Christian crusaders, who are actually enemies—he's a Knight Templar. Nevertheless, Nathan makes him his friend—something he's very good at and has to prove again when he's summoned to Sultan Saladin. Saladin poses a life-threatening riddle: which of the three religions—Christianity, Judaism, or Islam—is the right one. The wise Nathan tells him a fairy tale with the following punchline: "Being right is for nitpickers; living peacefully together is much more extreme!" [Disclaimer: The original "Parable of the Ring" has nothing to do with Tolkien's THE LORD OF THE RINGS!]. No sooner has the Sultan been reconciled than the Templar reappears, wanting to marry Nathan's foster daughter – but when he mentions his name, alarm bells ring for Nathan, and he stops him. The daughter's savior gets upset and complains to the Sultan, and then things get complicated: It turns out that Recha is the Sultan's niece – and the Templar is her brother, thus Saladin's nephew. And across the boundaries of the three religions, we arrive at the fairy tale finale: Everyone is one big family, except for Nathan, who is adopted because everyone likes him anyway.
