Viewer's Fave: Jiya's Roochik Goan food, Benaulim, Goa, May 2023

We visited Jiya’s Roo_Chik restaurant (Tel: +918329852098) in Benaulim, South Goa on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 on the suggestion of viewer Hema Harchandani, who left a comment on one of our YouTube videos. We had eaten at this restaurant before, as it is one of the homely food places in our vaddo, but this time we visited as YouTubers. Jiya’s Roo_Chik (ruchik means tasty in Konkani) is located on Benaulim Beach Road, bang next to the Don Bosco centre in Pequeno Pulvaddo, Benaulim, South Goa. It is just 120 metres from Benaulim’s Patrocinio chapel/Bank of India ATM crossing. If you are coming from the other side, Jiya’s Roo_Chik is just 120 metres from Papai’s corner (where old Papai's restaurant used to be) at the junction of Benaulim Beach Road and Margao-Varca Road. They started this restaurant just a year back. Jiya is the main chef. She is a great cook and cooking is her passion They are not professionally trained, just following their passion. They used to work for private firms. Then during the covid times, they decided to quit and start something of their own. Their specialities are chicken xacuti and varieties of fish thalis. Prices and costs: vellio fry Rs 120, xinaneo fry Rs 400, chicken xacuti Rs 160, kingfish, modso, chonak and prawns thali Rs 250, leppo, tarle and vellio thali Rs 120, bombil thali Rs 150 As you enter Jiya’s Roo_Chik, you will notice the hallmark of a good Goan cuisine restaurant - plenty of Goans eating here. Clearly, the fish thali is the most popular item. Here they have kingfish (visvon), modso (lemon fish), chonak (sea perch/sea bass), vellio (anchovies), bangdo (mackerel), tarle (sardines), prawns, bombil and leppo (sole fish) thalis. We ordered two leppo thalis, one chonak and one prawn thali. But first, we were hungry for some crisp fried vellio (anchovies) and xinaneo (mussels). The chonak thali had chonak fish fried, fish curry, godshe (sweet dish, in this case kheer), tendli (ivy gourd) dish, sol kadi (digestive drink), mango sasav (ghonta mango cooked with mustard seeds), salad, teesrio (shellfish), kismur (dried fish salad) and rice. The fish curry was superb. The sasav in the thali is something not seen often. (It's a) really delicious (dish), like pineapple, ambade, (ghonta) mango sasav. It's nice to see that in the mango season Jiya’s Roo_Chik made the sasav with (ghonta) mangoes. It’s taste is ambat-tikhat (ambot tik) - sour, sweet and spicy. Really delicious. Travis liked the sasav best. The fish curry was also very nice. Authentic Goan home made food. Please do visit Jiya's Roo_chik for a memorable meal!
