The Vow Nichiren Wrote as a Dead Man (Kaimoku-sho)
In February 1272, Nichiren Daishonin was exiled to Sado Island following a failed execution attempt at Tatsunokuchi Beach. He was housed in an abandoned temple in a graveyard called Tsukahara. From that location, he wrote the Kaimoku-sho, The Opening of the Eyes, one of his two major treatises. This video examines what the Kaimoku-sho actually contains: a vow written by a man who described himself as already dead. Nichiren states in the text: "A man called Nichiren was beheaded... What is writing this is his soul." The three vows that follow, "I will be the pillar of Japan, the eyes of Japan, the great vessel of Japan", are written from that post-execution position, with no political protection, no heavenly intervention, and full knowledge that the three obstacles and four devils were coming. The video covers the doctrinal structure that separates a vow from a wish, the function of sansho shima as proof of correct practice rather than punishment, and the karma-expiation mechanism Nichiren describes through the forge metaphor in the Kaimoku-sho and the Kyodaisho. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 📖 WHAT YOU WILL LEARN ✦ Why Nichiren described himself as already dead when he wrote the Kaimoku-sho — and what that changes about everything in the text ✦ The doctrinal structure of an unconditional vow: why it holds without heavenly protection, without results, and without a guarantee ✦ The Kaimoku-sho and Kyodaisho on sansho shima — the three obstacles and four devils as the proof mechanism of correct practice ✦ What the forge metaphor means for a practitioner whose opposition has intensified the longer they have practiced ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 📝 CHAPTERS 00:00 The Night After the Execution 01:55 Why the Gods Did Not Come 04:10 The Three Vows Written From a Graveyard 06:19 Sansho Shima - The Proof Mechanism 09:14 Iron, Forged, Becomes a Sword 12:12 What the Vow Demands From You ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 💬 Comment PILLAR if you already knew — or FORGE if this is new to you. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 🔱 GO DEEPER ✸ Daily practice, community & spiritual library → https://nmrkob.com/supporters/sign_in ✸ Nichiren Store → https://nmrkob.com/pages/nichiren-store ✸ WhatsApp community → https://whatsapp.nmrkob.com 🙏 Make an offering to support this channel → / @nammyohorengekyobuddhism ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 🔔 New video every Wednesday and Saturday → Subscribe: / @nammyohorengekyobuddhism ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ The Nam Myoho Renge Kyo - Online Buddhism channel explains the teachings of Nichiren Buddhism: the Lotus Sutra, Gongyo, Daimoku, and the daily practice of chanting Namu Myoho Renge Kyo.
