What kind of object is a work of art? This is not a rhetorical question. Throughout the previous three videos, we've discussed aesthetics as a discipline, approaches to studying art, and the relationship between producer, artwork, and viewer. But we've taken for granted something we've never directly examined: what exactly is the artwork that makes all of this possible? This video tackles this problem from two angles. The first is ontological: the artwork doesn't exist on a single level of reality, but on several simultaneously. Aaron Copland's analysis of music accurately illustrates how each level activates something different in the viewer's experience, and why the work breaks down if one level fails. The second angle is axiological: what are aesthetic values, where are they located—in the object, in the subject, or in the relationship between the two—and how do we distinguish between the beautiful, the sublime, and the other values ​​we use to evaluate a work? The closing video opens the door to the final installment of the series: the sublime as the aesthetic value closest to religious experience, and the question of what separates—or unites—the two.
