Day 2 of our Coal & Canopy Way bikepacking adventure takes us from Great Haywood to Thornton, following a fascinating route through the heart of England's industrial and transport heritage. Along the way we ride beside peaceful canals, cross historic bridges and pass grand country houses that tell the story of a landscape shaped by centuries of industry, commerce and innovation. The route weaves together canal towpaths, gravel tracks, quiet country lanes and former railway corridors, offering a constantly changing backdrop of waterways, woodland and rolling countryside. From impressive engineering landmarks to hidden sections of trail, every mile reveals another chapter in the region's rich history. As we continue our journey across this brand-new long-distance route, we discover how former coalfields and industrial centres have been transformed into thriving green spaces, while many of the historic structures that once powered the region remain standing as reminders of its remarkable past.
