韓国「犬肉禁止法」施行へ　葛藤する現場　45年続く犬肉店　生き残りかけヤギ料理(2026年7月19日)

With the implementation of the "Dog Meat Ban Law" in South Korea, which prohibits the sale of dogs for food, just six months away, we interviewed people facing the end of a long-standing food culture. In Seoul's Dongdaemun Market, a popular tourist destination, one can find a shop that has been serving dog meat for many years, with preparations already underway. On this particular day, which was "Boknal," the Korean equivalent of "Doyo no Ushi no Hi" (a day traditionally associated with eating oxen), the shop was temporarily full of customers seeking dog meat, believed to be nutritious and invigorating. A customer commented, "It's high in protein and undoubtedly of excellent quality. The taste is definitely different from other meats." More than 80% of dog farms that raised dogs for food have closed down in the two and a half years since the ban law was enacted. The owner of a specialty shop said, "Compared to before the law was enacted, the cost of purchasing dog meat has nearly quadrupled." Lee Deok-seon, CEO of a dog meat specialty restaurant: "We won't make a profit unless we raise the prices of our dishes. Right now, we're not making any profit. I wonder if the restaurant will close in the fall or by the end of the year." This year, the restaurant began offering dishes using goat meat, which, like dog meat, is considered a "stamina-boosting food." The idea that "pet dogs are family" is spreading in Korea as well.
