Teens jailed for luring Brianna Ghey to park and killing her in knife attack

The teenagers who murdered 16-year-old Brianna Ghey were jailed until they "no longer present a danger" to the public. Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe were aged 15 when lured their transgender victim to a park in Culcheth, near Warrington, Cheshire, in February 2023. Anxious and vulnerable Brianna was stabbed 28 times in the head, neck, chest and back in a "frenzied and ferocious" attack with a hunting knife. The killers denied murder and blamed each other for the attack on Brianna, which was described as "horrific" by detectives, but were convicted following a trial. Reporting restrictions protecting the identities of the pair, who had since turned 16, were lifted during a sentencing hearing at Manchester Crown Court. Both were sentenced to be detained at His Majesty's pleasure - the juvenile equivalent of a life sentence - with Jenkinson to serve a minimum term of 22 years and Ratcliffe 20 years. They will be transferred to adult prisons when they turn 18. The judge, Mrs Justice Yip, told them the terms were "lengthy for offenders of your age, albeit significantly less than an equivalent sentence for an adult". But she added: "How long you will actually serve will not be decided today. "You will only be released if in the future it is decided that you no longer present a danger - that decision will be for the parole board. "If you remain a danger you will serve very much longer than the minimum term and may never be released." The sentences were handed down with the "hope" - "if not the expectation" - that the killers could be rehabilitated in the future, due to their young age, she added.
