Student nurse jailed for life over hospital bomb plot

A former student nurse who took a viable pressure cooker bomb into a hospital in Leeds intending to "kill as many nurses as possible" was jailed for at least 37 years. Mohammad Farooq, 29, planned to launch an Islamic State-inspired suicide attack using the homemade device at St James's Hospital, where he worked, in 2023. The device would have been twice as powerful as those used by the 2013 Boston Marathon bombers. The plot stalled after Farooq was talked down by patient Nathan Newby, who saw him outside the hospital's Gledhow Wing. Farooq had also plotted an attack on the joint UK-US base at RAF Menwith Hill near Harrogate, but abandoned that scheme after failing to get past security. He was found guilty of preparing acts of terrorism following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court, having already pleaded guilty to possessing an explosive substance with intent to endanger life, firearms offences and the possession of terrorist material. Jailing him for life with a minimum term of 37 years, the judge, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb, told Farooq: “This was deliberately to cause maximum damage to life.
