Ana María Matute — La gran dama de las letras españolas | Historias de Creadores

Ana María Matute was one of the most singular and powerful voices in twentieth-century Spanish literature. This biographical documentary traces the complete life of the Barcelona-born writer: from her childhood between Barcelona and Madrid, marked by a stutter that left her mute for years, to her consecration as the third woman in the Royal Spanish Academy and her Cervantes Prize in 2010. The daughter of the Catalan bourgeoisie, Ana María Matute experienced the horrors of the Civil War in Barcelona as a child, saw corpses in the vacant lots of her neighborhood, stood in line for bread, and discovered in the Riojan village of Mansilla de la Sierra a rural, hungry, and unequal Spain that would forever shape her literary perspective. That quiet girl, who folded sheets of paper in quarters and called them books, would become the author of seminal works such as *Los Abel*, *Fiesta al Noroeste*, *Los hijos muertos*, *Primera memoria*, *Los soldados lloran de noche*, *La trampa*, *La torre vigía*, *Olvidado Rey Gudú*, *Aranmanoth*, and *Paraíso inhabitado*. Throughout this episode, we revisit her difficult marriage to Ramón Eugenio de Goicoechea, the grueling legal battle to regain custody of her son Juan Pablo during the Franco regime, her years in the United States as a visiting professor, her rediscovery of happiness with Julio Brocard in Sitges, the nearly two-decade-long depression that silenced her writing, the literary rescue spearheaded by Carmen Balcells, and the resounding success of Olvidado Rey Gudú in 1996. A story of literature, imagination, and resilience. A life that demonstrates that fantasy is not mere decoration, but a way to survive. A channel written and narrated by Carlos Valverde. "Stories of Creators" explores the lives of the great names in art, literature, and universal thought with a rigorous and accessible documentary approach for all audiences.
