There was something that bothered you (your intuition told you so), but you couldn't detect the reason for your discomfort. The other person SEEMED to be using good arguments, but even so, you felt like you were being winded up, but you couldn't explain why. Today you'll find out. Today I'm going to talk about 7 lies and fallacies that are frequently used in debates and discussions of all kinds (whether by politicians, salespeople, relationships, and so on). CIRCULAR REASONING FALLACY: Circular Reasoning occurs when the argument is reaffirmed instead of proven. Instead of proving why something is or isn't true, you simply restate your argument. COMPLEX QUESTION FALLACY: The Complex Question is when two unrelated or questionable topics are treated as if they were a single proposition. The audience is expected to accept (or reject) both ideas when, in fact, one may be acceptable and the other not. But the two ideas are combined, as if they were a "combo". FALSE DILEMMA FALLACY: This is when only two or three choices are given, as if there were no other options (when, in fact, there are more). They say: "you can do this or you can do that" (as if these were your only options, when there would be others). APPEAL TO PITY FALLACY: In the Appeal to Pity fallacy, the audience is tried to persuade not through solid arguments, but through emotion and pity. APPEAL TO IGNORANCE FALLACY: In the Appeal to Ignorance, one concludes that something is true because it has not been proven false, or one concludes that something is false because it has not been proven true. However, the lack of proof on one side is not proof on the other side. It may only indicate that something has not yet been proven. APPEAL TO PREJUDICE FALLACY: The Appeal to Prejudice occurs when prejudiced terms are used to convince someone of an idea. APPEAL TO AUTHORITY FALLACY: This is when an authority is cited to support an opinion, but this authority has no in-depth knowledge on the subject in question.
