The industry the Railway killed — Federation to the Sea Ep-4 - Hipcamp on the Murray River

Before the railways, this river was the highway. At its peak in the 1870s, over fifty paddle steamers were working the Murray out of one town — connecting the vast wool-producing inland to the coast. It was the most important commercial hub in inland Australia. Then the railways came. In less than forty years it was over. Episode 4 of Federation to the Sea explores Echuca VIC — the Port of Echuca, the paddle steamer era, and what happens to a town when the river that made it gets bypassed. We base camp two nights at RiverLyne on the Murray, a Hipcamp property with private river frontage just outside Echuca.
