Saving Private Ryan’s Landmine Mistake
In this episode of Stand in the Door 1944, we take a closer look the WWII British Hawkins mine seen in Saving Private Ryan, and the critical detail flaw that most viewers never noticed. The Hawkins mine was a British anti-tank mine used by both British and American paratroopers during the Normandy invasion in WWII. They provided a destinct advantage for lightly armed troops against enemy tanks but their lack of explosive power limited their usefulness in combat. However the mines shown in Saving Private Ryan appear to have one major problem that would have prevented them from detonating during the final battle of Savign Private Ryan. We’ll break down what the design of the Hawkins mine, how it was supposed to work, why it shows up in the film, and how this critical detail mistake was carried over into Band of Brothers and even modern WWII reenacting impressions.
