Going into production around 1943 these compasses in almost every movie and video game in the last 30 years that features American D-Day paratroopers. Additionally the myth of paratroopers wearing these compasses in Normandy has also infected the WWII reenacting community and, even worse, museum displays. In this video we discuss the details of when this compass was developed, its innovative design, its lack of use in Normandy, and well as when these compasses were actually seen in combat during WWII. We hope that this video is a stepping stone that will help the historical community in its ongoing pursuit of authenticity to accuartly represent and honor our WWII veterans and keep their stories alive.
