Nina is a teenage girl who grows up in an extremely limited world. From early childhood into her teenage years, she is never allowed to leave the house by her mother. Every desire Nina has to learn, to write, or to explore new things is consistently denied. Her mother convinces her that intelligence is useless, insisting that Nina was never meant to live beyond the walls of their home. Nina’s entertainment is strictly controlled as well. She is forbidden from watching content that shows the beauty of the outside world, such as travel or adventure. Instead, Nina is only allowed to watch cartoons, causing her to develop a childlike behavior, not by choice, but as a result of a world deliberately kept small. Meanwhile, her mother frequently exposes Nina to dark news stories about the dangers of the outside world, carefully planting fear so that Nina will believe staying inside is the only safe option. Living in isolation, Nina grows up without friends and without any real social experience. Until one day, the loneliness and boredom she has carried for years push her to express a simple wish: she wants a friend. Seeing this, her mother promises to bring someone into the house to keep Nina company, someone who will live with them inside those walls.
