Riding Behind BR Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9551 | Bridgnorth to Kidderminster | Severn Valley Railway Join me for an unexpected journey behind BR Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ D9551 as we travel from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster on the Severn Valley Railway (SVR). This working wasn’t originally planned. Following disruption caused by an earlier train failure, D9551 was called into action at short notice to help keep the timetable running, making this journey an unexpected bonus for passengers and enthusiasts alike. It’s always a treat to see one of these distinctive locomotives in front-line service, especially when stepping in to save the day. Built at Swindon Works in 1965, D9551 is one of British Rail’s Class 14 diesel-hydraulic locomotives. Nicknamed “Teddy Bears” by enthusiasts, the name originated from a remark by Swindon Works foreman George Cole: “We’ve built The Great Bear, now we’re going to build a Teddy Bear.” D9551 entered British Rail service at Cardiff Canton in September 1965 but had a surprisingly short BR career, being withdrawn in April 1968 after less than three years in service. It then enjoyed a long industrial career with the British Steel Corporation before entering preservation. The locomotive arrived at the Severn Valley Railway in 2013, was overhauled at Bridgnorth, and returned to traffic in 2017. In 2023, it was repainted into its original BR Green livery. Maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers, D9551 has become a reliable and popular member of the SVR fleet, regularly performing rescue duties, engineering work and passenger services when required.
