On the program with Héctor Soler from @CurioseaHistoria3, we analyzed the incredible true story of Richard Sorge, codenamed "Ramsay," one of the greatest spies of all time. A Soviet GRU officer of German-Russian origin, he infiltrated the German embassy in Tokyo posing as a "Nazi" journalist for the Frankfurter Zeitung. Thanks to his network of informants, he accurately predicted the date of Operation Barbarossa and confirmed that Japan would NOT attack Siberia. This information allowed Stalin to deploy 18 elite Siberian divisions that halted the Germans at the gates of Moscow in December 1941. Without Sorge, the Soviet capital would have fallen, and World War II would have taken a very different course. Despite his crucial services, Stalin completely abandoned him. The Japanese secret police (Kempeitai) arrested him in October 1941, and he was hanged on November 7, 1944. Only in 1964 did the USSR posthumously award him the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. In this program, alongside Héctor Soler, we debunk myths, tell the unvarnished story, and draw lessons that remain relevant today: good intelligence continues to decide wars. We saw it in 1941, and we continue to see it on the battlefields of Ukraine, where the difference between victory and defeat often lies not in tanks, but in who knows the enemy's next move first.
