POLONIA 1794: insurrección de Kościuszko y el fin de una nación* Eduardo Suárez Cuesta
In the program with Eduardo Suárez Cuesta on Bellumartis, we rigorously analyze the Kościuszko Uprising of 1794, one of the most heroic and tragic episodes of 18th-century Europe. Following the courageous Constitution of May 3, 1791—Europe's first modern constitution, which aimed to modernize the state, abolish the liberum veto, and strengthen the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth—Russia and Prussia responded with the Second Partition. Faced with national humiliation, Tadeusz Kościuszko, a hero of the American Revolution, returned to his homeland and proclaimed the National Uprising on March 24, 1794, in Kraków. He formed a people's army of nobles, bourgeois, and peasants (with the Połaniec Manifesto) and achieved initial victories such as the Battle of Racławice. However, the superior Russian-Prussian military forces crushed the revolt: defeat at Maciejowice, the Prague massacre, and the fall of Warsaw. This ultimate failure led to the Third Partition of 1795, which erased Poland from the map for 123 years. In this program with Eduardo Suárez Cuesta, we review the Constitution of May 3rd, the Kościuszko uprising, and the partitions of Poland with complete objectivity and without embellishment. Stories like this help us better understand the sovereignty conflicts that continue to define Eastern Europe today: the defense of national independence against imperial ambitions remains as relevant as it was in 1794… and as we are witnessing in the Ukrainian resistance against Russian aggression.
