The Accessible Canada Act - what it means for Canadians

In celebration of National AccessAbility Week 2021 and Red Shirt Day, Easter Seals Canada partnered with ARCH Disability Law Centre to offer this webinar on the Accessible Canada Act, presented by Rachel Weiner on June 1, 2021. The adoption of the Accessible Canada Act (ACA) by the Government of Canada in 2019 was an important moment for persons with disabilities. This presentation covers what the ACA does, its objectives and guiding principles, and how it supports the rights of persons with disabilities to equal participation and inclusion in Canadian society. It also covers some of the work that is currently underway to implement the ACA, including the development of standards by Accessibility Standards Canada and the development of regulations by the Government of Canada, Canadian Transportation Agency, and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunication Commission. About the presenter: Rachel Weiner joined ARCH Disability Law Centre in 2019 to work on a project about the meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in the creation of accessibility regulations. Rachel recently became a Staff Lawyer at ARCH and continues to work on initiatives relating to accessibility. Prior to joining ARCH, Rachel worked at IAVGO Community Legal Clinic, where she practised workers’ compensation and human rights law and co-supervised the law student program, Advocates for Injured Workers. Rachel holds a law degree from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law, and a Master of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School.
