Every shower is compatible with an RCD; what influences compatibility is the water quality, and we will explain everything in this video. This myth has been haunting some electricians for years, and an explanation is not always enough to justify why that RCD installed in the shower keeps tripping. What needs to be clear to every electrician is that the problem is not in the shower, but in the water. But how can the problem be in the water? That's right. The problem is in the water, and we'll understand why below. Every shower is tested according to the NBR-1290 standard to measure leakage current. This test is performed in 3 locations on the shower: 1- At the water inlet; 2- On the shower body; 3- At the water outlets. Metal plates are placed 1 cm from the water inlets and outlets, and using a 25 Ohm resistor plus a resistor arrangement simulating the human body and an ammeter (all connected in series), it is possible to measure these leakage currents. The most important detail is that these measurements are taken with a water resistivity of 1,300 ohms x cm at a temperature of 22°C. Water resistivity is the most important factor in ensuring an acceptable leakage current that will not cause harm to people showering and will also not cause unintended tripping of the residual current device (RCD). We know that water resistivity can vary greatly in different regions of our country. We also know that water from artesian wells has a different resistivity than river water. Seawater has very low resistivity, while river water has higher resistivity, and so on. The key is the water's resistivity. So, when choosing your shower model, check the water resistivity that the manufacturer guarantees it will work with the RCD (Residual Current Device), measure your water's resistivity, and make sure it's compatible with the chosen shower model. What if my water's resistivity isn't compatible with conventional shower models on the market? In this case, you have two solutions: 1- Treat your water to increase its resistivity; 2- Use a shower with a shielded heating element. What if my water has very low resistivity and I don't want to treat it or use a shielded heating element? Can I install a shower without an RCD? No, you can't. The use of an RCD is mandatory in wet environments according to NBR-5410, and this includes showers. By not installing a residual current device (RCD), you are failing to comply with a regulatory requirement, and if an accident occurs involving physical injury or death, you, as the responsible professional, will be held legally liable. It's best not to take that risk, right folks? So, you know: If my water has a resistivity compatible with the manufacturer's shower, I can install an RCD and it won't trip. If it's not compatible, I use a shower with a shielded heating element, and the problem is solved. 💡 Pay attention to #electricity 💡 __________________________________________________ 👇 Most Watched Videos: What they DIDN'T TELL YOU about the CONTROVERSY of the 3-PIN SOCKET. 🎥 https://bit.ly/2JE4P07 How to Make a Curve and Level Change in Cable Trays. 🎥 https://bit.ly/2ABlrk4 Higher Voltage, Lower Current, Truth or Myth?
