If these three impedances are equal, we can say that we have a balanced circuit. Here we observe one of the great advantages of three-phase systems. For the transmission of the same power, 3 or 4 wires are used, whereas 6 wires would be needed if 3 single-phase circuits were used. Important definitions: (1) Phase voltage: voltage measured between the star center and any of the terminals of the source or load; (2) Line voltage: voltage measured between two terminals (neither of them being the "star center") of the source or load. Obviously, line voltage is defined as the voltage measured between the conductors connecting the source to the load; (3) Phase current: current flowing through each of the load impedances; (4) Line current: current flowing through the conductors connecting the source to the load (excluding the neutral). This video demonstrates how the theory of electric current in a balanced circuit works, but one of the characteristics of balanced three-phase systems is that the vector sum of the phase voltages will also be zero. In other words, the voltages behave exactly like the current. The interesting thing about this test is that you can measure the current in the neutral wire and it will be zero. That is, in a balanced three-phase circuit, there is no need for a neutral conductor; the circuit functions normally with only the three phases. Important Note: At no point are we suggesting that the neutral is unnecessary in electrical circuits. This was merely a laboratory test to prove a theory of electricity. We know that in practice it is very difficult to achieve electrical circuits with balanced loads, and in these cases the neutral is extremely important, and its disconnection can cause significant damage to electrical systems. We are talking about the famous case of the "Floating Neutral," which is very harmful to installations.
