Disguised as tourists, two EXTRA reporters travel to the popular Egyptian resort of Hurghada and uncover dramatic abuses in a 3-star hotel popular with German tourists. Several vacationers had previously reported severe gastrointestinal problems after their hotel stay to the editorial team and RTL travel expert Ralf Benkö. These included relatives of Isabell Alu, a German woman from Bavaria. The 41-year-old died at the hotel after suffering severe gastrointestinal problems. The woman had no known pre-existing medical conditions and, with one exception, had eaten exclusively at the hotel with her companion. The vacationers' suspicion: "The food there made us sick." They report unrefrigerated food at the buffet, cats eating from the table, and exorbitant treatment costs at the hotel doctor. To investigate the allegations, Extra is testing the food in this and a nearby 5-star hotel, where gastrointestinal illnesses are also a recurring problem among tourists. The results are alarming: E. coli bacteria, Listeria, mold, and other pathogens were detected in the majority of the samples.
