We reported on this high-profile story several years ago – the family fought for two years for the release of the grandfather, who had been framed by his granddaughter. He was the second husband of the girl's grandmother; they lived in a remote village in the Voskresensky District, while the girl and her parents lived in Sochi. So, the parents sent the 11-year-old girl to the village for the summer to live with her grandmother. It was a remote place, with absolutely no entertainment for a teenager. According to the girl, she found instructions online on how to get your parents to take you out of camp – they advised telling her that a counselor was harassing you, and she followed the instructions. She wrote to her sister that her grandfather was harassing her, and her father saw it. The father, who was in Sochi, immediately rushed to the police, who handed him over to the Nizhny Novgorod police, and that was it. The very next day, the girl reported that she had lied about her grandfather, but it was too late—Viktor Trubachev was taken into custody. The grandmother, the girl's parents, and the girl herself all tried to free him, saying it was a joke, but to no avail. He spent two years in pretrial detention during the investigation, then was sentenced to 15 years in a maximum-security prison. The family tried to appeal the verdict, writing letters to the heads of every agency they could, but the sentence was not overturned. However, the grandfather was released several months after the court's verdict. We learned about this completely by accident—a journalist from one of the news agencies was preparing an article about the pedophilia charges in such controversial cases—with incriminating evidence. He called the grandmother to ask how the grandfather was. And she replied that he had long ago been in Kazakhstan. We went to the village of Verkhneye Ievlevo to interview my grandmother.
