It says, "... let him take back." What is meant by "take back"? Does this mean taking back after the talaq, before the end of the iddah, if this is the first or second talaq? Or does it mean taking back in the sense of returning everything to how it was? The majority of ulama (imams), says Sheikh Uthaymeen, believe that it means taking back after divorce, that is, the divorce has taken place, and this is taking back after it, because taking back is possible after talaq. But Sheikh Uthaymeen considers this opinion weak, because claiming that reconciliation occurs only after talaq is incorrect. The Quran confirms this. Allah (exalted and exalted is He) says: "And if he then gives her talaq (i.e., after two talaqs, her husband gives her a third talaq), then she will not be lawful for him after that until she marries another husband and has intercourse with him in that marriage. And if he (the second husband) divorces her after that, there is no blame on them for their going back to each other."
