Hiraeth for Trombone Octet - Chris Evan Hass | Score Video

It's an absolute honor to share that this piece was selected as the winner of the International Trombone Association's Octet Composition Competition!! I wrote this piece nearly a decade ago, the year I graduated from undergrad and was moving away from the place I called home the last four years to start my Masters in Composition. I truly did not realize how drastic of a change this would be and absolutely felt homesick leaving all my undergrad friends and community behind, but writing this piece felt like an apt way to cope. It feels fitting to be releasing this gorgeous recording (courtesy of the Columbus State University Trombone Choir) as we get ready to move again, after spending the last 8 years in our current home. This piece is available through IMBrassworks: https://imbrassworks.com/products/has... Official Program Notes: Hiraeth (pronounced HEER-eyeth) is a Welsh term, loosely translated to a longing and nostalgia for home. More than mere homesickness, it is an expression of a bond for a home to which you cannot return; a home that never was. This piece portrays this feeling of eternal longing through unresolved dissonances and a melody riddled with anticipations and suspensions, feeling as though it is constantly chasing and unfulfilling the harmony.
