The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is, after the Vatican, the largest and most visited Christian place of worship in the world. Approximately 20 million pilgrims visit it annually. The sanctuary was built at the express request of the Blessed Virgin Mary during her first apparition to Juan Diego, which took place on Tepeyac Hill on December 9, 1531. A small chapel was soon built on the site where Our Lady appeared to the poor Indian. It was later enlarged, and over time, a massive basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe was built. From the very beginning, miraculous conversions and healings have been occurring here. The current church was built near an earlier, 16th-century basilica completed in 1709. When the old basilica, built on marshy ground, began to fall into ruin due to earthquakes, a new sanctuary was built a dozen years ago, housing the miraculous image. The new sanctuary was completed in 1976 and designed by the renowned Mexican architect Pedro Ramirez Vasquez (designer of the Anthropological Museum and the Aztec Stadium, among other projects). The new basilica's shape resembles a large, circular tent once erected in the desert, the one God commanded Moses to erect at the foot of Mount Sinai. At the top of the basilica is a cross, the base of which is the letter "M," representing both Mary and Mexico. The new basilica can accommodate approximately 12,000 people, and the square in front of the basilica can accommodate approximately 30,000. It is in the new basilica that, on the central pilaster, the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is located. Thanks to the basilica's circular shape, the image of Our Lady can be seen from every corner of the church.
