Construction of St. Stephen's Basilica began in 1851 according to József Hild's plans in the Classicist style. The largest Roman Catholic church in the capital was built under unfavorable circumstances. A year after Hild's death, in 1868, the dome collapsed. Miklós Ybl continued construction. He corrected design flaws and redesigned the entire church, incorporating Renaissance elements. After Miklós Ybl's death in 1891, the interior, furnishings, and decorations were designed by architect József Kauser and parish priest Lénárd Lollok according to a unified iconographic program. Since 1897, the church has been named after the first King of Hungary, St. Stephen, whose personality had a decisive influence on Hungarian history, as Hungary became a Christian state through him. Only Hungarian sculptors and painters were invited to create the artwork. The church was consecrated in 1905. The building was thoroughly renovated between 1983 and 2003. Facade of the Basilica The main façade bears the words of Jesus Christ: "EGO SUM VIA VERITAS ET VITA," "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life." The sculptural group in the tympanum depicts the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus in her arms, surrounded by Hungarian kings and saints. In the tower niches are statues of the four Fathers of the Western Church (Ambrose, Jerome, Augustine, and Pope Gregory the Great). In the niches of the drum, seated figures of the four Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) face the four cardinal directions. On the eastern façade gallery is a large group of sculptures of Jesus Christ and the 12 apostles. All the sculptures on the façade were created by Leó Feszler.
